PANTHER NATION D-O-M-I-N-A-N-C-E

Nease had been stewing since last Tuesday’s bitter defeat to rival St. Augustine.  On Monday night the Lady Panthers served up the perfect recipe, while feasting on the Lady Falcons.  With senior Sydney Gomes being honored prior to tip off, Menendez was in trouble from the Get G-O.  Gomes received a commemorative basketball from Hall of Fame head coach Sherri Anthony, for scoring 2000 career points at St. Augustine last Tuesday.  In addition, the team and crowd extended a warm reception for senior Savannah Gomes.

Sav’s long, recovery road from knee surgery, was punctuated when her number was called to enter the game.  Welcome back ‘Lady Spice’!  Your courage and hard work has been a true inspiration to and for all.  Nease Stand Up!  O-KAY.

The Lady Panthers pounced and created havoc, while strutting their way to victory. With the win, Nease kept their undefeated mark at home (5-0 in the Den).  Menendez had no answer for the relentless attack and effort put on display by Nease.  With the running clock in play during the second half, the Lady Panthers substituted frequently on their way to a fulfilled appetite (64-16).

On the night, Nease welcomed Menendez head coach and Nease alumni (C/O ’93) Terrence Washington.  However, the warm welcome quickly turned into an unpleasant rout in defeat.  A 8-0 run to start the game, forced a quick timeout from the visitors. The night would belong to the Lady Panthers exclusively as they easily dismantled the Lady Falcons.  A 30-0 first quarter shutout set the course for what was to follow the rest of the way. Representing ‘Panther Nation’, is sweeter than the day before. Michael Johnson (U.S. Track & Field Olympian) once said, “The best motivation always comes from within”.

Junior Cami Robinson and senior co-captain Allie Fifield paced the way as double figure scorers.  Robinson tallied 17 points / 5 steals while Fifield scored 13 points, with all coming in the dominant first quarter.  Syd Gomes took a different approach on the night.  After scoring all 8 points in the first half, the ‘Matrix’ began to set the table the rest of the night. She had 10 dimes to go along with 5 steals.  The 'big three’, set the tone for a team boosting with confidence.

With junior Kendyl Ryan resting at home with the flu, senior Madison Crawford took advantage of starting minutes.  ‘Mad Dog' scored 9 points and did not commit a foul.  Nease was whistled for only 2 violations on the night.  Not to be outdone, junior reserve Sofia Baptiste-Olivier got in the mix, finishing with 8 points and 4 rebounds.  Nothing ventured, nothing gained.  Eight of the nine players dressed scored a basket in the game.  Although Savannah did not score, she dished out 3 assists and came away with a couple steals in her senior debut. Her presence on the court, more than accounted for any points needed.  The present stable of players comprising 'Panther Nation’, remain as a work in progress. Oh, but when they unite together, 'Katie bar the door’.

Nease (6-2) will get at it on Tuesday night in back-to-back games.  The Lady Panthers will make the short trek to Creekside and do battle with the Lady Knights.  Time to double your pleasure Lady Panthers.  Holler…… Coach Bernie Blue
