CHARITY BEGINS at HOME

The Lady Panthers opened up their 2021 campaign in the ‘DEN’ on Tuesday night.  After the Nease JV squad easily handled the visiting Lady Bobcats (Gainesville Buchholz), the varsity Lady Panthers took the court. The determined and athletic Buchholz squad put Nease on notice for most of the night.  Although the Lady Panthers emerged victorious on the night, a bag of mixed reviews were left to ponder.

Nease opened the game with a 4-0 run. After the first 3:30 minutes of play, the score was knotted at 8-8.  Buchholz responded with consecutive treys and a 10-0 run to lead 17-11 after one quarter of play.  Still trailing by one point (19-18) with 4:35 to go in the half, the Lady Panthers continued to claw itself into contention.  Nease scored on consecutive possessions to take the half time lead (25-24).

After intermission, the Lady Panthers came out with renewed confidence.  Behind the spark from Ella Harrison off the bench, along with 12, 8 and 6 points respectively from Syd, Alli and Cami, Nease would outscore Buchholz 28-15 in the 3rd quarter. With what appeared to be a comfortable 18 point cushion (53-35) to start the final period, the Lady Panthers were hyped.

However, the lead was cut to 10 (57-47) at the 5:24 mark.  The Lady Bobcats responded with an impressive run of their own (15-4) to cut the deficit to seven points (57-50), with 4:10 remaining on the clock.  The drama continued to build, as Nease was unable to put the visitors on lock down.  A driving layup by Syd Gomes kept the advantage for the Lady Panthers at 64-57 with 1:20 remaining in the game.

The Lady Bobcats answered with a trey after a Nease turnover, to cut the lead to 4 (66-62) with :25 ticks left on the clock.  Cami Robinson knocked down 2 big free throws and the Lady Bobcats would not score again as time expired.  Nease came away with a hard-fought victory in the Den (68-62).  The Lady Panthers were outscored in the final quarter (27-15), giving the Lady Bobcats new hope.  The rollercoaster ride could have led to a different outcome, if not for the collective effort by Nease at the free throw line.  The Lady Panthers connected on 27/34 free throws, including 16/21 from Sydney Gomes.

Syd finished the night with 32 points and 5 rebounds.  Junior point guard Cami Robinson scored 18 points (6/7 free throws) and Alli Fifield came away with 8 points and 5 boards.  Junior forward Kendyl Ryan tallied 6 points and pulled down 7 rebounds.

Nease will welcome the Lady Raiders from Orange Park to the ‘Den’ on Thursday night with a renewed focus and commitment to defense as a collective whole.  “Earned, Not Given”.  There is work to be done.  YOU KNOW!!  Bernie Blue
