RAIDING THE PIRATE SHIP

Two teams on different ends of the spectrum collided on Tuesday night. Nease as the #1 seed, took on the host and #8 seed Matanzas (Lady Pirates) in the opening round of the St. Johns River Athletic Conference tournament.  The heavily favored Lady Panthers, tried not to look ahead by overlooking the Lady Pirates.  Head coach Sherri Anthony made sure the group stayed engaged and played the caliber of ball expected of them.

Nease jumped out to a 5-0 lead, forcing a quick opponent timeout (6:39).  Things did not get better for the host team.  The score stood at 11-1 when another timeout was taken in an effort to 'slow the role’ of the Lady Panthers.  However, the lead would continue to swell and by quarter’s end the score stood at 21-1.  Although Matanzas scored 9 points in the second period, Nease continued to up the ante.  All nine players got in on the scoring act. With a 42-10 halftime advantage, the Lady Panthers were well on their way to advancing to Thursday’s Conference Semifinals.

With a running clock in operation early in the third quarter, the inevitable conclusion came to a rapid end.  Nease outscored Matanzas 27-5 in the second half to post the decisive victory 69-15.  Collectively, the Lady Panthers pounced the Lady Pirate’s ship, looting it for twenty-seven steals on the night.  On Thursday, Nease (15-4) will take on #4 seed Fleming Island who defeated Orange Park in the opening game of the tournament.  Tip off slated for 7:30 pm.

Sydney Gomes put together a unique double-double to lead the way.  The junior guard tallied 21 points and dished out 5 assists, but capped the night off with an impressive collection of steals (10).  Sophomore guard Camryn Robinson reached double figures also with 13 points, 4 steals and 3 assists.  Seniors Stephanie Manherz and Desiree Robinson scored 8 points each and combined for 13 rebounds (5 and 8 respectively). Frosh forward Tika Kondebrolu connected on 2 treys for her 6 points off the bench.

One game at a time with a keen eye on the prize.  The Lady Panthers gaze into the crystal ball with high hopes of regaining the Conference bragging rights.  Let’s get at it and see what the end will be.
