Nease returned to their safe haven on Thursday night, hosting their eastern county rival Ponte Vedra.  Both teams came into the night 0-1 in 6A district 4 play. The Lady Panthers and Lady Sharks were both victimized by the sting of the St. Augustine Jackets in their lone district game played thus far. With a victory, the winner would pretty much lock down the second seed for district tournament play at the conclusion of the regular season in two weeks. It was once said, ‘the heart that loves is always healthy’.

Before a pretty good Thursday night crowd, Nease would come out with built up emotions and a sense of urgency.  Ponte Vedra picked the wrong night to awaken one Lady Panther.  Senior co-captain Sydney Gomes would put on a night to remember One that is destined to fulfill a chapter in the history of Nease Girls Basketball folklore. Syd single-handedly ignited the charge by pouncing on the Lady Sharks for an 8-0 run to start things off. The ‘Matrix’ perhaps was spurred on by the pregame Alicia Keys tune (’New York’).

Whatever way you choose to dissect the matter, Syd was definitely dancing to a beat of her own.The defensive prowess and offensive explosion by Nease would extend the spurt to 13-1, forcing Ponte Vedra into a frustrated timeout to regroup. With 2:25 remaining in the period, Nease maintained control (13-4) behind a hyped bench providing extra sauce to wet the appetite of the Lady Panthers. Cami Robinson was given the green light after sitting out the pass couple of games due to illness. She would answer a Ponte Vedra 5-0 run with a dagger from behind the arch to close out the exciting first eight minutes with the double digit Nease lead 21-11.

The Lady Sharks would now begin to fight back.  Ponte Vedra opened the second stanza with a three-pointer to spark an 8-1 run and cut into the deficit (22-19), forcing a Nease timeout at the 5:00 mark. Syd scored on consecutive drives to the basket and Cami converted 1 of 2 free throws to push the lead back to seven (27-19). The Lady Sharks responded with a trey and layup to close within three (27-24) and 2:53 remaining before half.  Again, Syd took matters into her own hand. The senior co-captain sandwiched two layups between one of the same from Ponte Vedra and Nease went into the locker room still ahead 31-26.

On the first possession of the third period, Ponte Vedra knocked down another trey, but as was the case on the night, Syd quickly responded with consecutive layups.  Fifield would convert both of her free throw attempts after a foul and with 4:40 left in the quarter, Nease remained in control (37-31).  Savannah Gomes would connect on a corner trey in front of the home bench to increase the lead (40-31) with 2:51 remaining. Deja vu? The sister to sister act showed that the previous trey was no coincidence as the two reconnected for another shot from behind the arc to conclude an 8-1 run at the buzzer. The fireworks ended what would prove to be the pivotal quarter of the game. The 14-6 output by the Lady Panthers left them salivating for more with the 45-32 edge and one final quarter to go. Who made the sauce? I am the sauce, figuratively speaking (Nease Stand Up)!

After making both free attempts, Syd would force a charge to begin the final demise of the Lady Sharks in the fourth quarter. At the 6:20 mark, Nease led comfortably (45-32).  A Ponte Vedra 4-0 run was too little too late, as Fifield and Syd Gomes  went 4-4 from the charity stripe to put the nail in the coffin and secure supremacy in the rivalry with the VICTORY (51-39).  When all was said and done, Nease (15-3) would remain undefeated in the ‘Den’ (8-0).  The Dub would be the Lady Panthers tenth in the past eleven games.

On a night when backcourt mate Cami was still not feeling up to par, the Gomes effect was in full operation.  Cami managed to knock down two treys in the opening quarter and finished with 7 points.  Savannah Gomes complimented Syd’s dynamic game with 8 points of her own.  However, the team ultimately rode the wave(s) generated by ‘You Know’.  Yes, Sydney Gomes was the real force to be reckon with on the night.  The standout guard is a prolific scorer, no doubt. Exhibit A,  SYD would score 30 points for the third time in as many games.  She finished the game with exactly 30 points on 10/14 shooting and 8/9 free throws. Exhibit B,  Gomes grabbed 8 rebounds and collected 6 steals and 3 defensive assists.

Collectively, the Lady Panthers went  88% (15/17) from the free throw line, including a perfect 12/12 in the second half.  There is indeed strength in numbers.  Nease will go for the week trifecta (3-0) as part of the triple header on Friday with the boys against Tocoi in the DEN.  Tipoff slated for 6:00. I see YOU.  Coach Bernie Blue
